The home of Fried Green Tomatoes.

443 McCrackin St.

This movie was one I watched growing up with my grandma; I wish that she was here to step into this movie and enjoy the town with me. It was precisely how I imagined it would be, and if you loved the film as much as me, you definitely should take the day trip here.

Stepping inside the doors of Whistle Stop Cafe, you are transported into Idgie and Ruth’s life. The peach cobbler is to die for, so save room for that. The sampler platter allowed me to try the chicken tenders, onion rings, sweet potato fries, and, of course, the fried green tomatoes. I’m not too fond of tomatoes, but I was not about to come all this way and not try them. Everything was delicious and did not disappoint. The pulled pork was good, and the BBQ sauce was a bit spicy but so good. I arrived about an hour and a half before they closed, so I did not have to wait for a table. There is a stand by the door outside that you write your name on to get a table when they are busy. When I visited, it was the middle of summer, and they did not have AC, so be warned. Also, there is a single toilet, and I can imagine on a busy day, there is a line.

Walk around the town of Juliette and see all the sites. I think it’s important to know when the cafe is closed, most of the shops close too, so I would recommend going earlier in the day and maybe shopping first. Stop at the whistle-stop store (a cross from the train station) with unique wooden items, Fried Green Tomatoes souvenir shirts, magnets, and more. I had the privilege of meeting the older gentleman who hand-carved much of the stuff inside. He also shared some of the town’s history and what it was like when they were filming. They also have a room where they play the movie in a loop. Each shop has different souvenir items, so I recommend walking around to ensure you get the one you want.

Pick up a map; it will tell you where to find filming locations, such as the BBQ pit, Smokey’s shack, Buddy’s arm, the stage, and more. The bridge is not on the map, which you can see on the other side of the tracks. Explore the area around the main road and down by the water.

I did not search for other filming locations in the area, but many are there.

This town could easily be an added stop to another destination. I did this on my way to Atlanta. I have a couple of other posts of places in Georgia if you want to plan a more extended trip.

I hope you visit this fantastic town and experience the life of Ruth and Idgie. Tawanda!
